COMMUNIQUE BY FRENCH REGIONS AMID JACQUES DELORS DEATH
Jacques DELORS has built a brilliant political career, both national and European, led with talent and a constant attachment to the harmonious development of France and Europe, concerned with the balance between economic development and social cohesion policies.

Former President of the Commission of the European Communities, winner of the International Charlemagne Prize, he played a decisive role in the construction of Europe. With a view to the establishment of the single market from 1992, Jacques Delors initiated in 1988, with the support of President Mitterrand and Chancellor Kohl, a major reform of cohesion policy in order to combat disparities in economic, social and territorial cohesion. Endowed with the second budget of the European Union, cohesion policy is characterized by several fundamental principles which are still in force: multiannual programming, co-financing, additionality and partnership.
The Regions today ensure, thanks to this reform, the strategic management and operational implementation of the cohesion policy, endowed with an amount of €18 billion for France, for the period 2021-2027. They thus accompany and support territorial development and social cohesion projects, which contribute to the reduction of inequalities in Europe, the creation of numerous facilities, the financing of the ecological transition, support for the decarbonization of businesses or even support to solidarity actors.

In the painful ordeal of his death, Régions de France stands alongside his family, his friends and more broadly all those who shared his political career. Carole DELGA, President of the Regions of France, joins all the elected officials who have supported her European commitment and who express, in these circumstances, their sadness and their respect for her exemplary political career."
